William Lilly a 17th century practitioner of horary astrology, wrote about Mars virtues when well dignified, describing this planet as: “...willingly will obey no body; nor submit to any, a large reporter of his own Acts, one that fights all things in comparison of Victory, and yet of prudent behaviour in his own affaires.” William Lilly, Christian Astrology 1st ed, 1647 page 66. That being said, Mars is not just about winning, but the embodiment of defying commands, strategy, assertion, calculation, independence, competition, self-promotion,  being proud, and headstrong. I called unto Mars using all their names & I asked that the wearer of this oil be bestowed the following: Phlebotomy/ blood letting skills, winning competitions, repelling enemies, metalsmithing, cooking, surgery, strengthening timidity, humbling the anger of a king, to turn away robbers and evil doers, to create strong fortresses & strong defenses, for becoming a good fighter and campaign/activist work.

I suffumigated and consecrated this oil with crow feathers, the stinger of a scorpion, cypress, ginger, cayenne, and black peppercorn. Agrippa says the incense of Mars is, "euphorbium, bdellium, gum armoniac, the roots of both hellebores...all odoriferous woods, as sanders, cypress, lignum balsam, and lignum aloes." Three Books of Occult Philosophy Book I, Chapter 44.
